The ONLY SBA Courses in Queens

In response to a growing need for sustainable building education, Airtek Environmental Corp., a leading provider of environmental consulting, laboratory analysis, and construction industry training services, will introduce the only Sustainable Building Advisor (SBA) course in Queens. The firm has formed a partnership with Queens College to launch the SBA course, which is scheduled to start in September of 2010.

The Need for Sustainable Building Education in New York

The movement towards sustainable building design has been growing, especially in New York City. On December 2006, Mayor Bloomberg announced PlaNYC to address New York City’s growing sustainability, infrastructure, and environmental problems. The plan included sustainability measures for the City’s land, air, water, energy, and transportation to achieve a 30% reduction in carbon dioxide emissions. Because of the City’s limited space and growing population, the design and development of sustainable buildings is necessary in order to achieve the goals of PlaNYC.

The Sustainable Building Advisor Course

The SBA course is a 9-month training program that consists of 100 hours of combined classroom and hands-on learning for professionals working in the field of sustainability. The program includes interactive exercises and field trips to actual construction projects to provide real-life exposure to sustainable building practices. Professionals who complete the course and pass the Certified Sustainable Building Advisor (CSBA) exam receive the CSBA designation that complements other industry designations, such as the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) accreditation.

The Benefits of Taking SBA Courses

Benefits of Taking the SBA Course

By taking the SBA course, working professionals will learn to identify and explain sustainable building concepts. They will also learn how to analyze the costs and benefits of implementing sustainability practices. The Certified Sustainable Building Advisor accreditation will allow them an opportunity to work with designers, architects, builders, operators and utilities managers on their projects. The professionals will learn to apply LEED guidelines and fulfill the criteria required to become eligible to take the LEED Green Associate exam. The SBA course is approved by the US Green Building Council (USGBC) as a 400 Level – Mastery course and it qualifies for American Institute of Architects (AIA) approved 100 learning units.

The SBA Instructor

Airtek’s primary SBA instructor is an expert in sustainable building practices. He holds not only the CSBA designation, but also the LEED Accredited Professional and the High-Performance Building Design Certification. The instructor is a Certified Industrial Hygienist with over thirty years of environmental industry experience. He is experienced in teaching the SBA course and has particular expertise in buildings design, operations and management for environmental quality, including LEED processes for new construction. Airtek’s SBA instructor is a member of the Board of Directors of the National Sustainable Building Advisor Program (NaSBAP), the organization that administers and oversees the SBA courses nationwide.

Airtek Environmental Corp. is a leading provider of environmental consulting, laboratory analysis, and construction industry training services. The firm has over 20 years of industry experience and has completed over $75 million dollars worth of continuous environmental work. For more information about Airtek Environmental Corp., contact us today.

Airtek Launches EPA Lead Renovator Training Course

Good News! Airtek has launched an EPA Lead Renovator Training Course. It’s a new law with severe penalties. After April 22, 2010, contractors and property owners who perform renovation, repair, and painting that disturb lead based paint in pre-1978 housing or child occupied facility must be certified by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and must follow the lead-safe work practices required by EPA’s Renovation, Repair, and Painting (RRP) Rule. The penalty for non-compliance could be $32,500 per violation.

This urgent need to become EPA certified has created a huge industry demand for lead renovator training. Airtek Environmental Corp., a leading provider of environmental consulting and industry training services has launched a superior, approved EPA lead renovator training course to meet this growing demand.

The New EPA Lead Renovator Rule
The new EPA Renovation, Repair, and Painting (RRP) Rule focuses on “target housing” and “child-occupied facility”. A “target house” could be a home or a residential unit that was built prior to December 31, 1977. This definition does not include housing for the elderly or disabled, unless a child who is less than 6 years old resides in the house. A “child-occupied facility” is a building constructed before 1978 and regularly visited by a child under 6 years of age.

As of April 22, 2010, firms performing renovation, repair, or painting activities that affect lead-based paint in pre-1978 housing or child occupied facility are required to obtain EPA lead renovator certification. In order to become certified, renovation firms must take and pass an EPA accredited lead renovator course. Airtek Environmental Corp. is a leading EPA approved provider of this required course.

Exclusions from the RRP Rule
Projects that do not affect lead-based paint containing components are excluded from the RRP rule. The EPA has also established guidelines for minor repairs, such as interior renovations that affect less than 6 square feet of painted surface per room and exterior renovations that affect less than 20 square feet of painted surface per side, that are excluded from the new rule.

The Penalty for Non-Compliance
The civil fines for non-compliance could be up to $32,500 per violation. In addition, a criminal fine of up to $32,500 including jail time will be imposed if a violation is knowingly and willfully committed.

The Airtek EPA Lead Renovator Training Course

Airtek Environmental Corp. is one of the EPA accredited provider of the lead renovator course. Because the firm is both a lead-based paint management and training services provider, the Airtek lead renovator course is superior in quality.

Airtek’s lead renovator program is comprehensive because of the firm’s 20 year experience. As a lead-based paint management consultant, Airtek has extensive knowledge of industry practices, standards, and regulations. In addition, the Airtek course instructor has over 30 years of experience teaching courses related to lead-based paint. This combination of knowledge and training capability allows the firm to deliver a lead renovator training program of higher quality.

Renovators who register for the course at Airtek Environmental Corp. benefit from the firm’s quality training. Students at Airtek learn not only the lead safe work practices as required by the EPA, but also the standards and regulations relevant to their industry. They learn from professionals who have field experience in applying the lead-based paint safety practices. The course is a combination of classroom and hands-on training, giving the students an extensive learning experience.

Airtek’s Lead Renovator Course is EPA approved for certification under Section 402 of the Toxic Substance Control Act (TSCA).

Fiterman Hall Deconstruction and Remediation

Airtek is managing all environmental aspects of the Fiterman Hall Deconstruction and Remediation phases. This project has involved careful application of nearly every environmental specialty from industrial hygiene studies for workers accessing the site, to waste characterization of both potentially hazardous building components and normally non-hazardous components impacted by World Trade Center dust. The project involves constant communication with and regulatory approval from:

USEPA Region 2 NYCDEP NYSDOL NYC DOB OSHA NYS DEC

This project involves intensive political contact with the Office of Sheldon Silver, the Office of Jerrold Nadler, and with Manhattan Community Board #1.

In addition to the environmental investigation of the site to prepare the work plans, the community monitoring program required the following air monitoring:

Asbestos

Metals (including lead)

Particulate Matter – 10 Micron

Particulate Matter 2.5 Micron

Dioxins/Furans

Polychlorinated Biphenyls

Polycyclic AromaticHydrocarbons

Respirable Silica

Particulate Mercury

Gaseous Mercury

Airtek has successfully managed the remediation phase of the project and has completed the deconstruction phase.
